Kite
I sailed a kite so high
I thought that it would touch the sky,
It danced about and dived so low
And then it waved to let me know
It was such fun up in the blue
It wished that I could be there too!
Funny Kite Poem
I am a kite, high in the sky,
Floating along on the wind.
And the funniest thing,
I'm holding a string,
With a child on the other end!
The Kangaroo
It is a curious thing that you
don't wish to be a kangaroo,
to hop hop hop
and never stop
the whole day long and the whole night, too!
to hop across Australian plains
with tails that sweep behind like trains
and small front paws
and pointed jaws
and pale neat coats to shed the rains.
If skies be blue, if skies be gray,
they bound in the same graceful way
into dim space
at such a pace
that where they go there's none to say!

Cut big K's from construction paper. Let children find "K" pictures in magazines. Cut pictures and paste on outline of K.
Sack Kite
Fold a 1" cuff around the top of a grocery bag. Attach scrap paper and streamers as decorations and use paint, crayons or markers to finish. Attach a 36" string to the cuff. To fly the kite, children must run and fill it with air.
Kangaroos
Cut kangaroo shapes from brown construction paper, both mama and baby. Attach a square pocket to mama and insert the baby.
Kaleidoscopes - use toilet paper rolls, coffee filters, dot with markers (it soaks color) and tie around roll with rubber band - look into light for the cool designs created. This neat idea sent in by Mary! Thanks!!
Katie No Pockets by H. Rey is an excellent book. I have had my kids match keys, print with keys and put kisses on a cut out letter K. Have mom send in lipstick or use small clean lipstick samples. The "kids" love this.
Cut kite (diamond) shapes from wallpaper books.
Then cut them in half (long ways).
Let the children match the kites.
This is an excellent game for 3 year olds.
You can also do this activity with a smaller version and let them glue the kites on blue paper. You could mix or match the halves to make the kites.
Use KERNELS of popcorn for sorting and counting activities.
Use Kix cereal for sorting and counting exercises.
How high can you kick? Compare two or three kicks and the kicks of classmates. Make a graph.
Keys
Try to pick up different kinds of keys with magnets. Which ones could be picked up and why?
Unit studies: Koalas, kangaroos, kittens
Georgia sent me this great
Martin Luther King, Jr. poem. Thanks, Georgia!
Martin Luther King (equality song or poem)
M Is for Martin who was born upon this day.
L Is for Luther who loved every one.
K Is for King and that was his name.
Martin Luther King, born in January!
Hop like kangaroos, taking long jumps, short jumps, backward jumps, sideways jumps.
Kangaroo Relay
Children pretend they are kangaroos, with pouches. Use bean bags as the pouches. After dividing into two groups, the children race each other across the floor, on hands and feet, with stomachs in the air with pouches (beanbags) perched on their stomachs. If a pouch falls off, the child has to pick it up.
